Temporary Exhibition: Polish People's Republic under the Magnifying Glass. Before the Change

From 17/05/2019 until 31/07/2019

Since Friday, May 17th, we invite you to the educational hall of The National Museum in Szczecin - The Dialogue Centre Upheavals, where the exhibition "Polish People's Republic under the Magnifying Glass. Before the Change" will be presented.

The exhibition will show various aspects of everyday life in the times of the Polish People's Republic. It has to affect above all the emotions and memory of the audience. People who have spent the years of their youth in those days, will be able to feel nostalgia, emotion, look at a long-forgotten object with which they associate various memories. Perhaps, on the contrary, they will ask themselves how they were functionning at that time, since everything was so homogeneous, without expression. The younger generations will probably be entertained and surprised by the picture of the past everyday life, and the following questions will arise in their heads: how could people live in such conditions? Where is the mobile phone? The exhibition will be a chance for intergenerational approximation. The grandson visiting it with his grandfather will be able to move with him to the world of his youth, to which the memory of the older generation returns more and more often.

The exhibition "Polish People's Republic under the Magnifying Glass. Before the Change" is not just an idyllic picture of the recent past. Through the prism of ordinary objects, an attentive viewer, if only they want to look closely at the exposition, will see an underlying message. The children's press in Russian, lying next to little girl's toys, reglamentation cards for food on the kitchen, damaged oilcloth, postcards from the internment camps in the bedroom of a housewife, who longingly awaits the uncertain return of her husband. Here the question arises: was this everyday world in the People's Republic of Poland really as happy and funny as it may seem at first glance through the magnifying glass? Maybe from behind this idyllic everyday life a more dark and sad image of life emerges? These objects, as part of the material culture, constitute an essential and integral part of culture, but also create its identity.
