"They carry water until they lose their handles..." (a Polish proverb) Pitchers, jugs, ewers will be the theme of the "Pitcher of the Year" exhibition, available since June 6th at The National Museum in Szczecin – The Szczecin History Museum. The exhibition will include nearly one hundred objects, mostly from the resources of the Department of Ethnography of Pomerania, several from The Szczecin History Museum and mediaeval cruses from the collections of the Department of Archeology.

Pitchers have been having many purposes at household: handling and storing liquids or as tableware. They also had a decorative function. The multitude of tasks had a fundamental impact on the differences in size, shape, manufacturing technique and ornamentation. Among the exhibits that will appear on the exhibition, there are clay, stoneware, faience, porcelain and glass jugs. A large part of the collection are pitchers made by pottery technique, but there are also factory products. Visiting the exhibition, guests will be able to see both small jugs for cream or milk, whose height does not exceed a dozen or so centimetres, as well as large, tall water jars.

Particular attention may be paid to a pitcher from 1807, belonging to the collection of Szczecin white ceramics.

The impulse to create an exhibition devoted to pitchers was this word's winning the plebiscite entitled "Youth Word of the Year 2018" organized by the PWN Scientific Publishers. The term "pitcher" in its basic sense refers to a dish handled on one side, spouted on the other. Nowadays, in the era of social media, it has received a new sense thanks to popular Internet creators. It became a bit funny, a little provocative and – what is important – non-vulgar name for a person who is not very bright and not very intelligent. This term, although sometimes used in a negative sense, more often appears in a caressing or jocular sense.

The popularity of the word "pitcher" is evidenced by the fact that Internet users create its numerous definitions giving and frequently refer to it, as well as by the fact that it has become the object of interst of linguists, who see the causes of the phenomenon in the ambiguity and voicing of this word .

The carreer of this word, defining a practical and well-known pot of everyday use, has become the starting point for the creation of a museum exhibition on a pitcher.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a plebiscite. Each visitor can take part in it by choosing a pitcher that they like the most. The one with the most votes will receive the title of the Pitcher of the Year.
