The National Museum in Szczecin – The Dialogue Centre Upheavals, during European Museum Forum conference in Sarajevo, has been awarded Special Commendation at EMYA - European Museum of the Year Award 2019 prestigious competition. The National Museum in Szczecin – The Dialogue Centre Upheavals has been appreciated for "its exemplary storytelling and community engagement, [...] raising awareness of what happens when civilized values are abandoned, and how people can rebuild communities after such tragedy". During the Sarajevo ceremony, The National Museum in Szczecin has been presented by Marta Mizgalska from the Museum's Department of Social Communication.

Established in 1977, the European Museum Forum awards, established in 1977, express the appreciation of innovation in museology. They support the role of museums as public institutions, promoting cooperation and exchange of ideas. The EMYA Award also promotes civic and democratic values as well as human rights, the interference of cultures over political and social barriers, and sustainable development.

The European Museum Forum (EMF) is an independent non-governmental organization, registered in Great Britain, aimed at promoting innovation in museology and at encouraging the exchange of good practices among museums in Europe. EMF operates under the auspices of the Council of Europe and runs numerous projects in the field of culture. With nearly forty years of experience, it is one of the leading European organizations for the development of the public quality of museums in Europe. The representative of EMF and the promoter of the EMYA competition in Poland is The National Institute for Museums and Public Collections.

Four museums from Poland have been presented at the European Museum Forum Conference in Sarajevo: The Antonina Leśniewska Museum of Pharmacy – a branch of the Museum of Warsaw, Four Domes Pavilion Contemporary Art Museum – a branch of The National Museum in Wrocław, Pan Tadeusz Museum – a branch of The Ossoliński National Institute in Wroclaw (also with commendation for the courageous and innovative answer to the question how a historical document can become significant for the 21st century), and The National Museum in Szczecin – The Dialogue Centre Upheavals.

In the final of this year's edition of EMYA, there were forty museums from all over Europe, selected among several hundred applications. The main prize for the European Museum of the Year was given to the Dutch Rijksmuseum Boerhaave in Leiden.
