KARTA Centre ans The National Museum in Szczecin invite to the exhibition "1918. Restoring Independence" and a meeting wuth KARTA Centre.

2018 is Poland's jubilee of regaining independence. On this occasion, the KARTA Centre prepared the "Infinitely Independent" anniversary program. Within it, we have developed an exhibition that presents the crucial moments of the processes taking place on Polish land in the last year of the First World War along with their key event – the rebirth of the Polish state after 123-year-long captivity.

The exhibition can be seen in Szczecin from November 9th to 20th. On November 13th, a curator-guded tour around the exhibition will be held, together with a meeting with representatives of the KARTA Centre – Adam Safaryjski (the curator of the exhibition) and Adriana Kapała (an expert at social archivistics). During the meeting, we will also discuss the ideas of social archivistics, in order to encourage local communities to actions aimed at preserving the heritage of their region. We will also present the "Infinitely Independent – People" portal, which contains the largest census of the citizens of the Second Polish Republic, that is 5.5 million signatures of citizens of Poland in 1926.

1918. Restoring Independence

The exhibition, arranged chronologically and based on carefully selected source material and the most interesting historical photos and other graphic elements, presents the crucial moments of the processes taking place in Poland in the last year of the First World War with their key event - the rebirth of the Polish state after 123-year-long captivity. Each board, in addition to archived photos, is provided with a brief substantive commentary, outlining the context of the depicted events and the source text (fragments of diaries, memoirs, letters, documents), being history witnesses' personal commentary on the processes. What is important, the narrative of the exhibition is focused on the contemporary accounts of the witnesses of history and does not contain a today's commentary.

The curator of the exhibition is Adam Safaryjski, a cultural expert and editor of the "Karta" quarterly, curator of, among others, "From Poland with Love" exhibition telling a moving story of gratitude of Poles for the United States help in Poland's independence regaining in 1918.
