Anywhere, but Here / 5. Media State of Emergency
The National Museum in Szczecin - The Museum of Contemporary Art | Staromłyńska 1, Szczecin, Polska

"Anywhere But Here” is the motto of the fifth edition of "Media State of Emergency", a presentation by artists and students of The Department of Painting and New Media of The Art Academy in Szczecin that’s been held periodically since 2012. Because it can be read and interpreted in often surprising ways, the motto is purposely given in its native English idiom.

This year's edition is the product of cooperation among Polish curators at The National Museum in Szczecin (Magdalena Lewoc, Marlena Chybowska-Butler) and their Belgian counterparts at "La Chataigneraie” Centre Wallon d'Art Contemporain (Marie-Helene Joiret, Justine Mathonet), located near the city of Liege, as well as artists-lecturers from three schools: The Academy of Art in Szczecin (Wojciech Łazarczyk), École nationale supérieure des arts visuels de La Cambre in Brussels (Johan Muyle and Michael Dans), École Supérieure des Arts de la Ville de Liège – Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts de Liège (Ronald Dagonnier) and their present and former students.

The exhibition at The National Museum in Szczecin – The Museum of Contemporary Art (December 7, 2018– March 4, 2019) is the practical outcome of discussions on approach and technique during workshops held in Szczecin (December 2-6, 2018). The workshops of renowned and experienced artists and students and graduates at the beginning of their artistic careers also revealed approaches that arise from teaching methods in specific cultural realms.

Anywhere is always somewhere. There is no place in the world that exists outside a cultural context regardless of whether we think of metropolises, deserts or uninhabited islands. Each view reveals the observation center, and we ourselves are the observation point – inseparable from descriptions of the observed phenomenon. When we want to look at ourselves, we use a mirror. But what we see in it is, paradoxically, our own image, nothing more.

The “Anywhere But Here” project is an attempt to relocate the center of observation somewhere far away -- to a distant place that enables us to see ourselves looking at the mirror. To see ourselves with our imaginations, ideas, dreams. The relocation might be physical – connected with a travel experience; or it might be purely mental or virtual; related to anthropological, linguistic or historical researches. It may – nay, it should -- combine various methods.  Finding the “distant point of observation” seems to be important not so much to discover and know the world – or to control it – but to live and be in it.

This project is included in the Executive Program for the years 2017–2019, as a continuation of cooperatiion between The National Museum in Szczecin and Centre Wallon d'Art Contemporain "La Chataigneraie" adopted according to an agreement concluded between the government of the French Community of Belgium, the government of the Walloon Region and the French Community Commission of Brussels-Capital Region, and The Republic of Poland.
