Vernissage: Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2002-2017
The National Museum in Szczecin | Gmach Główny Muzeum Narodowego w Szczecinie, Wały Chrobrego 3, 70-500 Szczecin, Polska

The exhibition consists of 70 photographs, chosen and presented as the best in the history of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition in years 2002–17, which has been held yearly since 1965 by BBC Worldwide and The Natural History Museum in London, and by the second of them alone for four years. During those 15 years, the exhibitions were presented in Poland.

Today it is the world's most-valued and the largest contest on this subject, available to professionals and amateurs, and for youth and children as well. Most wildlife photographers aspire to win the prize. These pictures are distinguished, which contain a combination of the original look, luck and knowledge of nature, which does not necessarily require the best equipment and journeys around the world.

For many years, 40-50 thousand works have been entering the competition annually, made by over 4 thousand photographers from more than 90 countries. Through lifeless deserts, over high mountains, in thick tropical jungles and on the open ocean – these photographs are not only picture ambassadors of the wildlife world, but they also show the artistic perfection, technical advancement of photography and the beauty of nature captured by photographers at the moment of its magnificence.

Life runs quickly. Birth, threat, fight, survival – these happen again and again. Most of these everyday dramas are unknown to us. Thanks to photographers from around the world, some of these moments have been immortalized so that we can see and contemplate them. Some are ordinary, others are unusual. Some hearten, others ask questions about our impact on nature. Also thanks to this, the exhibition has enormous educational value, showing the drama and diversity of life on Earth, and thus stimulating the desire to care for its future quality. Nothing works more than suggestive photography that stimulates the imagination, stirs the mind and moves the heart. Also ours.

Poland is among dozens of countries on all continents where over a million people have been visiting the exhibition for many years. In 2003, the first Polish edition was presented at the Pomeranian Dukes' Castle in Szczecin, and subsequent ones in 2005-15 were successfully presented at The National Museum in Szczecin. Now, after a two-year break, the exhibition returns to the same place, but in a different, wider form.
