August 1980 – Szczecin 2020

Large-size canvases with graphics by Agnieszka Dajczak have been hung on the front elevation of the building of The National Museum in Szczecin at Wały Chrobrego. They are one of elements of an exceptuional Project "August 1980 – Szczecin 2020" arranged by the City of Szczecin, Szczecin Artistic Agency and TRAFO.

The events of August 1980 are one of crucial identity-related events of the history of Szczecin. The Szczecin agreements were an important element on the way to re-building the civic society in Poland and an informal, civic "second constitution". This important fact is referred to by the athors of the Project rather not by martyrologically petrifying its meaning, but by highlighting its role for contempoirarily developing modern city.

Project "August 1980 – Szczecin 2020" is a living poster gallery seen in the form of a walk around the city. Important poster authors form Szczecin have been invited to participate: Dawid Czajkowski, Agnieszka Dajczak, Lex Drewiński, Piotr Depta-Kleśta, Marcin Papis „Kras”, Leszek Żebrowski. The curator fo the Project is Stanisław Ruksza.

AGNIESZKA DAJCZAK

A work by Agnieszka Dajczak may be seen on The National Museum in Szczecin building at Wały Chrobrego. The artist used the symbolic gesture of "Victoria" and "Cranosauruses" - a contemporary symbol of port Szczecin.

Over 10 years ago, when the City of Szczecin developed the Starówka embankment, the "Cranosauruses" were about to be scrapped. At the request of the Museum, the City transferred the old cranes to our institution. We had been taking care of them, best as it was possible at that time, for several years. Meanwhile, thanks to social involvment of maritime environment of Szczecin, they turned into a new symbol of Szczecin. Several years ago, the municipal authorities, having appreciated their role in the city landscape, decided to restore them thoroughly. Finally, the Museum transferred the cranes to the City of Szczecin, which turned them into peculiar and admired illuminated objects for good.
