Szczecin Anchors of Memory and Hope... Forgotten Monuments of Maritime Szczecin History and Technology

Learn about Szczecin anchors with Wiesław Seidler.

Wiesław Seidler – retired academic maritime teacher, initiator and longstanding Coordinator of Szczecin Maritime Education program, enthusiast of the sea and achors, sailor, diver and journalist will run a meeting about anchors at the National Museum in Szczecin, Wały Chrobrego 3.

The meeting will be held in Polish, however, you may find a handful of facts on anchors below.

A corss, an anchor and a heart are the most popular graphic symbols representing faith, hope and love. An anchor is used to hold a ship in one place on the water. The first type of anchor was, undoubtedly, a tied stone. Today, as estimated, around five thousand kinds of anchors are used in sea and inland sailing. The most popular among them are four types: grapnel anchor, admiralty anchor, stockless anchor and CQR plough anchor. The popular drawing meaning hope is the simplified admiralty anchor.

Large vessel anchors generally end their service and their lives with their ships. Only some are more "lucky" and become interesting exhibits enriching maritime or history museum collections as well as squares or streets of harbour cities or other places, even far from the sea. WHy did they find themselves in those locations? They are merely one of the inventions of technology. But none of them is probably as popular as the anchor. Ther surround us everywhere: in sailing, art, iconography, graphics, heraldry, craftwork; they are souvenirs, decorations or symbols - as "Kotwica", the one of Polish Underground State.

Only in our maritime, port and shipyard city of Szczecin, several dozens of such "street" anchors may be found in the very centre. They include the great "Sedina" anchor, one of the biggest and the most interesting ones, located in Plac Tobrucki in the former place of the sculpture decorating the pre-war Manzelbrunnen (the Fountain of Manzel). We suggest to begin the walk and encounter with the route of Szczecin memory anchors with this one, following the list of twelve "photo-stops", including (suggested names):
