MONUMENTS WITH A HISTORY
200 YEARS OF THE POMERANIAN ANTIQUITIES COLLECTION
"The Dawn of Pomerania. Collection of Pomeranian Antiquities" exhibition space

18.00 – 24.00
The first of four events planned for this year to mark the bicentenary of the collecting of artefacts from the Pomeranian territories. Initiated in 1824, the regional collection of the Society for the History and Antiquities of Pomerania was developed up to the early twentieth century and became the basis for the collection of the Szczecin Pomeranian State Museum, established in 1927. Together with the exhibits of that institution and some smaller pre-war collections, it is now part of the holdings of the National Museum in Szczecin. Its most numerous components are archaeological artefacts and a rich archive covering the history of prehistoric and early Pomeranian discoveries since the 1820s. Such archives are an extremely important source of additional knowledge about finds related to the most remote history of human culture in the region, sometimes the only one from which information can be drawn about the contexts in which individual artefacts were discovered: their origin in grave furnishings, treasures or settlements from times thousands or hundreds of years ago. This resource is also a testimony to the interest of the inhabitants of Pomerania in archaeological artefacts over the past two centuries. Finding their way into the museum collection, these objects became elements of the archaeological heritage which shared the fate of the region and its modern history..

During the event, it will be possible to listen to five stories (in Polish) about the history of several exhibits from Szczecin's archaeological collection, as well as to view several selected finds and archival documentation illustrating the diversity of the exhibits' fate, which will additionally be placed in the space of the exhibition "The Dawn of Pomerania" in the form of a mini-display.
