NMS-DCU Action: "Lights of Memory” - Light a Candle for Victims of December '70

Join our action "Lights of Memory" on Sunday, 17 December 2023, at 5.00 p.m., at Solidarności Square - the roof of the National Museum in Szczecin - the Dialogue Centre Upheavals

As we do every year, we will light candles together for the victims of Szczecin's December '70, the very place where most of them died.

This year 17 December marks the 53rd anniversary of the revolt during which the people of the Coast demanded to be treated with dignity. Forty-four people were killed and more than a thousand injured in Gdańsk, Gdynia, Szczecin and Elbląg. In Szczecin alone, there were sixteen fatalities and more than a hundred were wounded. As many as twelve people were killed by army and police bullets in the square in front of the then Provincial Civic Militia Headquarters and in its vicinity.

Traditionally, we will arrange candles into the inscription GRUDZIEŃ '70 (December '70) and light them at the time at whoich the first shots were fired into the crowd of demonstrators.

In addition to our candles, anyone wishing to do so may also light their own one. The campaign was supported by the Marshal's Office of the West-Pomeranian Voivodeship.
